Decades before the internet, Aramco TV brought the classroom to your living room. Discover the 1957 launch that educated a generation.
How did lessons reach people’s homes decades before the internet?
And what did Aramco have to do with it?
Let’s go back to Dhahran. September 17, 1957.
That day, Aramco TV went on air, making it the second television station in the Middle East and the Kingdom’s first Arabic-language television station.
It was the beginning of a journey that brought people together through culture, learning, and entertainment.
But how could a screen become a classroom?
With a teacher on screen.
Lessons in Arabic and English, alongside science and health programs, reached viewers in their homes.
And people did more than watch.
Hundreds wrote to the station, requesting books to accompany the lessons.
