Abdulaziz F. Al-Khayyal, former senior vice president and board member at Aramco, and a current board member at Halliburton, has passed away.
A remarkable career at Saudi Aramco
Al-Khayyal began working at Aramco in 1981 as an engineer with the Ju'aymah Gas Plant's engineering division after graduating from the University of California in Irvine, first with a B.S. in mechanical engineering in 1977, and then an M.B.A. in 1979.
He held several supervisory positions from 1982 to 1991 before being promoted to director of Personnel in February 1991. Two years later, he was named president of Saudi Petroleum International, Inc. in New York City, and in 1994 was made president of Petron Corporation in the Philippines.
Upon returning to the Kingdom in December 1995, Al-Khayyal served as executive director of Sales and Marketing and was named to the position the following year. In 1997, Al-Khayyal became vice president of Employee Relations and Training, a position he held until he became vice president of Corporate Planning in November 1998.
In September 2000, he was named senior vice president of International Operations, and in 2002, was named senior vice president of Refining, Marketing, and International. In September 2004, Al-Khayyal was named to the Saudi Aramco Board of Directors.
In 2007, he was named senior vice president of Industrial Relations, the position he retired at in 2014.
A lasting legacy beyond retirement
During his career at Aramco, he was instrumental in the success of critical projects, including overseeing the creation of the Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare joint venture in 2014.
After leaving Aramco, Al-Khayyal went on to serve on the boards of directors of several major companies.
Among his most notable positions were:
- Chairman of the Board of the National Gas and Industrialization Company (GASCO), which he was named in 2025 after serving on the board.
- Member of the Board of Directors of Halliburton, which he joined following his retirement from Aramco in 2014, becoming one of the first Saudis to serve on the board of the major oilfield service company.
- Director of Marathon Petroleum Corporation since 2016.
