Aramco’s commitment to innovation and excellence was recognized once again recently at the 2022 Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (ADIPEC) awards — one of the largest and most prestigious industry events in the region.

The Upstream research arm of Aramco, the EXPEC Advanced Research Center (ARC) featured in numerous categories at this year’s award ceremony, including Breakthrough Research of the Year, Breakthrough Technological Project of the Year, and Young Technical Professional of the Year. Eight Aramco professionals were also named finalists across five different categories — making Aramco the organization with the highest number of finalists.

Global leadership

Aramco is proud of its global leadership position in upstream research and development, and continually invests in breakthrough technologies.

Waleed A. Al-Mulhim, executive director of Petroleum Engineering and Development (PE&D), said: “Upstream research and technological advancements are vital strategic elements of our company to meet the world’s energy demands. At Petroleum Engineering and Development, we leverage our upstream knowledge and technology to support the energy transition to a sustainable future.”

Ashraf M. Al-Tahini, EXPEC ARC manager, said: “Our dedicated and creative scientists and researchers keep Aramco on a trajectory of consecutive successes, thereby cementing our upstream R&D leadership position. We strive to lead the development of cutting-edge upstream technologies, and this is evident by the international awards and recognitions.”

Among those recognized at the ADIPEC awards were:

Winner of Breakthrough Technological Project of the Year Award

EXPEC ARC’s FracBots: A wireless micro-sensor network for mapping and monitoring hydraulic fractures in conventional and unconventional reservoirs. The technology is the first deployed Internet of Things (IoT) solution to generate and exchange data inside the reservoir without human intervention.

Finalists in Breakthrough Research of the Year

EXPEC ARC’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) Assisted Microwave Meter: An innovative nonradioactive solution that accurately measures and helps optimize oil and gas production in real-time.

EXPEC ARC’s “indestructible” Polycrystalline Diamond Compact (PDC) cutter technology, developed to make the world’s first catalyst-free PDC cutters for a “one-run-to-total depth” game changing drill bit application. The new catalyst-free PDC cutter, patented by Aramco, sets a world record as the hardest material. This helps minimize the nonproductive time in drilling associated with changing drill bits.

Winner of Young Technical Professional of the Year

Hatem Bajuaifer, who won the Young Technical Professional of the Year award, said focused on three patents he worked and documented as part of his submission.

“In my submission, I was talking about three patents and more than 25 publications. My first patent was to increase the efficiency of oil processing and to maximize the hydrocarbon yield,” said Bajuaifer. “The second one was about minimizing H2S (hydrogen sulfide) content and enhancing NGL (natural gas liquid) quality.

“The third patent was to clean the grids in dehydrators and desalters,” he added.

Shortlisted for Young Technical Professional of the Year

Hala A. AlSadeg, a petroleum scientist who works in the Reservoir Engineering Technology Division, and Muqbil S. Alkhalaf, a petroleum engineer who works in the Production Technology Division.

The recent achievement at the ADIPEC awards is testimony to Aramco’s commitment to creating an environment of excellence, paving the way for individuals and organizations within the company to excel on a regional, national, and global level. The ADIPEC awards are just one example of many forms of international recognition that Aramco receives, and our professionals and innovative technologies attract many prestigious awards.
