Your Voice: Failure as Teacher

There is no doubt that success is the ultimate goal for all human beings, while failure is considered unforgiving and unacceptable. Interestingly, it is not the failure which is troublesome and worrisome, but it is the fear of failure that creates all kinds of anxiety, preventing realization of human potential and endeavor.

As a matter of fact, we are all afraid of failure and mostly hide from this occurrence in shame instead of analyzing and considering it as a continuation of steps toward success.

In the pursuit of targets and goals in totality, failure plays a pivotal role in reaching the destination. It is like a catalyst, which can safeguard future failures. It is a lesson learned that can be used as a study case.

No child has ever learned to walk or to ride a bike without falling down. Most job seekers go through many interviews and come across quite a few rejections before landing on their dream jobs.

Most startups experience outright failures or unexpected lackluster performance from the outset. Writers have to practically beg publishers to publish their books until they achieve fame.

Various journalists are unsuccessful in the beginning to find any slot in the international news network, rather, they have been found reporting petty crimes and trivial city news.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was famous for various qualities and characteristics, but one of the reasons for his legendary status was due to his persistence in regaining his world heavyweight boxing title three times after losing.

Wall Street has many successful fund managers, managing billions of dollars, but most of these managers experienced failures in the beginning of their careers, and some got fired due to costly mistakes.

It is often the same repeated story in the movie industry. Most movie actors start their careers with roles of extras or minor side roles, which don’t seem important at all. Some just lose patience and don’t remain persistent, but those who stay steadfast with the idea that the small opportunities eventually lead to big success, become cinema legends and superstars.

United States President Barak Obama could not even win the state senate election when he tried for the first time in the state of Illinois. He did not even qualify to attend the democratic convention, but he had high aspirations and remained persistent. Making history, he became the first black president of the U.S.

Let us not forget that most of the scientific discoveries and inventions go through many iterations, trials, failures, and untiring human efforts before turning into useful products.

“Failure should be our teacher, nor our undertaker. Failure is delay, not a defeat. It is temporary detour, not a dead-end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing,” said Denis Waitley an American writer, consultant, and motivational speaker.

We don’t need to deliberately adopt a path of failure. We must strive to do our best to be successful. While we should not leave any stone unturned to accomplish tasks, it is important to understand that failure doesn’t mean the end of the world, rather it is an opportunity, which could lead to ultimate success.

Failure should be taken as an event for reevaluating strategies, redirection of resources, and indulging vigorously toward your goal with higher commitment. There is no doubt that failure is certainly an essential foundation for ultimate success.

Let us celebrate failures by analyzing and contemplating failures as lessons learned and as a guide for the future success and the prosperity of a business.
