GCC’s first Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner

Hassan M. Alzain, an environmental health scientist with Environmental Protection (EP), recently became a Chartered environmental health practitioner, and in doing so, became the first Saudi and first citizen of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region to receive this status from the U.K. Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). To obtain this award, Alzain successfully undertook an environmental health project based on COVID-19 Prevention in Contractor Camps and this was followed by a professional interview by a panel of leading CIEH environmental health practitioners in the U.K., to validate Alzain’s technical competency and professional judgement.

Empowered by the company to pursue his passion

Alzain gives credit to Aramco for giving him the opportunity to contribute to high-level environmental health projects and gave a sincere thanks to EP, whom are actively encouraging the development of young emerging professionals to improve and sustain the quality of life.

“Environmental Protection plays a key role in assuring the highest level of health protection to the company’s workforce. Environmental Protection continues to fuel the passion and ambition of young and talented professionals to develop and execute high quality projects; showcasing the company’s environmental and health capabilities on a national and international level. This was a key factor in enabling me to provide support to all Aramco organizations during the COVID-19 response, especially in contractor camps,” Alzain said. He also acknowledged the support of his mentor, Jason R. Hall, who holds a Chartered Fellowship with the CIEH.

As a member of EP’s Environmental Health Unit since 2017, Alzain’s work has focused on environmental health assessments and the development and management of environmental health standards in the context of the oil and gas industry. Most recently, and since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Alzain has been actively involved in EP’s support to the company’s COVID-19 response, while also playing a key role in the development of the Aramco Contractor Well-Being Program.
