JHAH Healthy Recipe: Falafel pita sandwich
Baking up some tasty falafel with tahini sauce a healthy treat.
Falafel, especially when baked, can be a healthy treat and/or meal. Add some pita bread, tahini sauce, and some vegetables, and you have yourself a feast.
Ingredients (6 servings)
- 18 pieces baked falafel
- 3 tablespoons tahini (sesame sauce)
- 3 whole-wheat pita bread
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 onion, sliced
- ¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
Prepare baked falafels that are made from chickpeas or use ready-made falafel mix. Baked falafel is healthier than fried falafel and has fewer calories and fat.
Heat the pita bread in the oven or the microwave and divide each into two halves.
Stuff each pita bread half with three pieces of falafel and vegetables, and drizzle with tahini sauce.
Serve with salad, nonfat or low fat yogurt, or Laban to make your falafel more balanced and nutritious. Tahini paste can be replaced with yogurt.
